Perspectives for the Professionals, the role of the family in prompting recovery, took place in the Tower Hotel Waterford on Friday 22nd September 2017.
Chaired by John Saunders, CEO of Shine and Dr Miriam Kennedy, Director of communications and public education, college of Psychiatrists of Ireland, this one day event brought together a range of professionals, people with self-experience of mental health difficulties and their relatives to discuss a number of topics.
Firstly, the implications of the act of information sharing and confidentiality for family carers and the mental health service multi-disciplinary teams and secondly the benefits involved in such an undertaking.
Shine staff, service users, relatives and other mental health professionals were invited to give their thoughts and personal experiences on the work that had taken place around this area and the continuing work that was ongoing.
Ms Gina Delaney (Managing Partner, ARI) and Mr Liam Hennessey (Head, HSE Mental Health Engagement) also spoke of the importance of engaging with ARI and the role of the HSE Area Lead for Mental health in the Waterford area.
To end the day Susan McFeely (National Training, Support and Awareness team leader of Shine) spoke of the importance and the enormous benefit of Family Recovery and the process. The group also heard from people directly affected by mental health issues who spoke candidly about stories of their own recovery.
Here are some comments which were made in the evaluations about how the day went:
“Great variety, interaction was excellent”
“I learned a lot, thank you”
“The most relevant/useful sessions were the stories from people, knowledge from people from different backgrounds”
