The Shine Basement Resource Centre Cork

By Kate Morgan on Thursday, August 3rd, 2017 in Featured, News.

The Shine Basement Resource Centre is based on Washington Street in Cork. We offer a
space for members to work on their own recovery as part of a person centred approach. This
supportive and inclusive approach to recovery, enables members to gain information and a
better understanding of their own mental health.

The Basement Resource Centre uses a partnership approach where members and staff work together to achieve a variety of activities and goals. Over the last year for example, the centre set up a community garden in a historical part of the city in Kyle Street.

The Resource Centre works with the South Lee, North Lee and the homeless mental health teams. We also often work in partnership with other community groups.

Our core values are:

  • Individuals and communities have the potential to change and improve their own
    lives.
  • Members are entitled to live a healthy life, free from prejudice, discrimination,
    isolation and distress.
  • All Resource Centre members are of equal importance, however, the support we offer
should reflect peoples’ different needs and resources should be allocated accordingly.

Our services and activities include:

  • Provision of information and advocacy (e.g. training, employment, housing, rights
    and entitlements, services and supports).
  • Skills development through participation (e.g. administration upskilling, co-
    facilitation).
  • Access to resources (e.g. training and meeting rooms, computers, email and internet).
    Support (e.g. mentoring and groups).
  • Learning and creative groups.
  • Social groups and events.
  • Networking with the local community services and supports.
