The Basement Resource Centre Shine took part in the Cobh Vitality Festival on Sunday 26th June. Staff and members got involved in the free family Health and Well-being event by running a stand. The day offers an opportunity to learn more about supports and services based in the community. The theme for this year’s event is ‘Combating Isolation & Loneliness’ which can affect people of all ages and backgrounds in communities all over Ireland. Members Michael O’Mahony and Liam Burke worked with staff on the stand while centre coordinator Denise O’Reardon got the train to Cobh with several members who came to enjoy the sun shiny day.
This year we chose to highlight the Green Ribbon Garden project. Our stand gave information on mental health supports available in Shine and we held gardening demonstrations. We discussed the benefits of gardening for your mental health and many children got involved by planting their very own sunflower seed to take home. It was a brilliant afternoon with free entertainment and fun for all ages. Of course, the Ireland V France game was on so this added to the hive of activity going on in Cobh town.
Shine relies on donations to continue its work and provide much needed services to people with mental ill health as well as their family members and carers.
